so, I have this friend who's hot. She's not out of control hot, with men stepping into traffic hot, but none-the-less; sexy. I got the hint in the past that she was interested in me, but I always cooled off those vibes because our personalities and beleifs are too different, and It would not be a good idea for either of us to be involved. we are exactly the wrong persons for one another.

So, we've been friends for years now. Circumstances being what they are, events turned in such a way that she is now my roomate. This in and of itself is frought with its own difficulties; as the very reasons we would be incompatible as lovers makes us less than ideal roomates. To oversimplify it: I'm a Punk and she's a hippy. So you can imagine the nature of the conflicts.

So here's the relevent part: she's shaved her head. And god damn its hot. I mean I saw her topless last week, and it was nice, don't get me wrong; but the shaved head is alot to have to deal with. Its like having a cupcake on a plate in front of you all day that you are not allowed to eat.

I have to admit just how beautiful bald women really are. I am a bald male myself from western Canada. I have been bald myself for several years now. Yes, self inflicted. I am bald because I have alopecia areata. Alopecia is a medical condition which has only one symptom- your hair falls out. There is no cause or cure. I have had it since I was 10. For me it's been patches of hair that have fallen out (and grown back, it comes and goes). I made the decision to shave my head about 5-6 years ago as a way of "taking back control" of something I have had no control over for many years. It was the best thing I ever did and now the only reason I miss hair is because sometimes I get cold!

I am a gal with pretty severe features, a thin, angular face...I think my face is good, it's fine, and while I normally wear my hair really short, that plunge of getting the clippers out is a biggie. I really don't think that it would be if I didn't wear glasses, but I'm thinking I'll look like a dork shaved and bespeckled.

how to get a close shave?

hi,
i'm new here. i have alopecia. the dumb patchy kind. i lost about 80% my hair about 11 years ago and have been shaving the rest ever since.
what hair i still have is quite dark so i end up with shadow patterns when i shave & it bugs me. i want a nice smooth dome. is this possible? if so, can anyone give me any tips on how to get there? i like my head bald but i'm shy about showing the spotty bits in public, And i'm tired of the hats....

Any and all ideas & tips welcome!

I must draw your attention to a woman of the early 20th Century who was perhaps the first woman to shave her head (and PAINT it, no less) for art (as opposed to for religious reasons): Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, one of the most compelling figures (male or female) of the New York Dada scene - Recently there has been published a wonderful scholarly biography of the Baroness entitled BARONESS ELSA by Irene Gammel - There is a brief online biography at the link below, from which I excerpt the following account:

"An observer of the times, Allen Churchill, relates that her head was shaved and painted with a "bright vermillion lacquer" (The Improper Bohemians: A Re-creation of Greenwich Village in Its Heyday, New York: E. P. Dutton, 1959). In "CAMPING UNDER GLASS: The ghost of Florine Stettheimer, remote and glittering, evokes a period between the wars in a new show at the Whitney" (Time Magazine, September 18, 1995), Robert Hughes recounts, "The Arensbergs had bizarre figures of the Greenwich Village avant-garde like Baroness Elsa von Freytag Loringhoven, the first New York punkette, who made public appearances with her hair shaved off and her scalp dyed purple." Matthew Josephson recounts having seen her marching around Washington Square, "wearing an inverted coal scuttle for a hat, a vegetable grater as a brooch, long ice-cream spoons for earrings, and metal teaballs attached to her pendulant breasts. Thus adorned and clad in an old fur coat, or simply a Mexican blanket, and very little underneath, she would saunter forth." (Life Among the Surrealists New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1962)
