hi,
i'm new here. i have alopecia. the dumb patchy kind. i lost about 80% my hair about 11 years ago and have been shaving the rest ever since.
what hair i still have is quite dark so i end up with shadow patterns when i shave & it bugs me. i want a nice smooth dome. is this possible? if so, can anyone give me any tips on how to get there? i like my head bald but i'm shy about showing the spotty bits in public, And i'm tired of the hats....

Any and all ideas & tips welcome!
thanks,
~kerri

    hi kerri.
sorry to hear about the alopiecia.
although you look great bald, i realise you would rather have that choice.

i feel the same way about the last year starting to loose my hair thru mpb. not that the vast majority of the public would have noticed as im bald now 15 years.

    yes it is possible :-)
shave against the direction(s) of growth
i like to drop a few drops of oil (veg oil will work!) into a clean sink of hot as you can stand water after shaving..
and using a facecloth, wash the head.
use lots of water on the cloth..bend over the sink if you have to, i do ;-)
and when you stand up and feel you will feel all the mini stubble sticking up.
dont wet your razor, just go back up over it like that
the oil will act as a lube
also i dont know if you like them but i swear by the extreme 3s
they bend so go over your head almost the width of the blade, not just tangental like the mach 3s
also they are not over priced
you may have to repeat the rinse shave thing a few times..but its worth a try, right?
also with this method they dont drop that ugly looking shaving strip off onto your head unlike the mach3s
also i like my head bald too..and i mean bald to the touch up against the growth and everything
so smooth a fly cant land
    and thats what i get

Please try this and let me know how you got on or post any questions to me or here
    thanks,

    Mick

      hi mick,
thanks for the good tips. i use a mach3 but don't get as close as i'd like (obviously) i swear i must spend more $ on razors than ever i did on hair products! still i will plunk down my pennies on an extreme3 and give it a whirl.
i would not have thought to try the oil trick.
the idea of angry fies trying to land on your head cracked me up- and that is exactly how smooth i would like to get it.
if it works for me i'll bug someone with a digital camera to take a no landing photo...
      thanks again,
      ~kerri

Have you considered electrolysis? It sounds like the 80% won't grow back and the 20% isn't giving up without a fight.

      hi K,

has anyone had success with this method that you know of? mostly i have just heard people complain that the process is not worth the $ or the discomfort.
i am very curious to know.

(with my luck it would work great AND trigger the rest to come back!)

thanks for the sweet post :-)
first off no i havent tried the head blade thing, looks like too much hassle for me
and go easy on the pressure and speed when shaving!!
it cuts down on nicks and its more enjoyable too ;-)
if you enjoy shaving that is!
now for a question of my own as i live in irishland
    whats the sun?
is that the big orange thing in the sky we sometimes get here for about 4 hours every leap year, when we celebrate something called "summer"??
kinda feels warm, is that the thing?
    :-P

and ya, serious a few weeks in sunlight, not even summer sun will tan it all up, and shaving every day or other day to keep the stubble away helps

and glad to know my tips helped !!
    yay for me :)
but it feels good doesnt it to be completely smooooth and shiney???

and to feel the breezes on that lovely smooth shiney BALD head ?

i know it does to me :-)
might be fun to train someone you love/trust in to shaving it too for you..

i have fun at the salon thats all i can really say lol

    mick.

    and stay bald and happy!!

    mick yet again

      Hey-
I was in the same boat a couple of years ago...I have alopecia too and had the dark patches. And I never really came up with a good way to deal with it other than shaving every day. I just do it in the shower in the AM.

Now most of it has fallen out so I don't have the shadows anymore. What I do have has turned blond for some reason.

      Ahhh the mysteries of alopecia!

Kerri I'm having my Facial hair removed (MtF) and from my end your probably better off Shaving!

Its not that it hurst(having 16 needles with electrical current stuck in your skin! it just takes a long time and costs a lot of Money! and then when they're done, they go back and do the whole thing over again 5 more times :( then there is the cost 75-85 your shelling out an hour! and your dealing with ingrwin hairs that turn into boils and pimples
save your money my dear and lstick to the razers! dear! I don't have a choice and I need to do this but I think you can find a better way!

Ps I really wouldint recomind Laser hair removal either at this point till the industry is better regulated! feel free to email me if you have
      any further questions! :)

        Hi sweets,

I've been shaving my head for over two years. I have a full head of very dense thick hair that grows much faster than i would like. If your hair is not real dense I would suggest waxing. Be very careful with this as since my hair is quite dense I ended up with bruises afterwards.

Vegetable oil can clog pours and cause problems with ingrown hairs. It is also a thick oil and won't allow the blades to get quite as close as you might want. I use Skin so Soft or will use mineral oil to shave mine. It extends the life of my blades and gives me an extremely close shave without the nicks and cuts.

Something else to consider is hair minimizing cream. (No I don't sell AVON) Skin so soft does carry one in their line. It does work but takes time. My hair used to grow at a rate of about an inch a month, now its about half that. Well worth the small effort to keep away that five o'clock shadow.

          hmmn,
hadn't thought about skin so soft or mineral oil!
i make cosmetics so i have a lot of oils on hand to mess with, to date i have discovered that jojoba works Not at all, and macadamia nut makes my head smell like, well, macadamia nuts (no thanx!).
since i am really picky about what things smell like i have started working on an emulsified shave creme thats heavy on the oils (virgin coconut mostly) it's still in the formulating stages- tweaking it here and there to make it do exactly what i want it to...maybe mineral oil will give it that elusive "slip" i cannot seem to find yet.
(the oil and water round 2 suggestion does actually get me the closest shave so far)

a question about hair growth retardants- do you think they really work? no one i know has ever used them- anyone got some expierence with them?
is the minimizing cream of a similar ilk?
the minimizing cream sounds interesting...(but, what does it smell like?)
if you have some handy- would you be willing to post me the ingredient list? maybe i can whip something similar up.
          -don't tell avon on me!

i believe the only way to rid yourself of the 'shadow' you mention is to remove the actual hair follicle, so it will blend with the rest of your alopecia-bald skin. this can be achieved through electrolysis and will leave the head VERY smooth and clean looking. it really depends on what you are comfortable with....afterall it is an involved process and will take a while to achieve permanent baldness, but in the end it's the only truly effective way to get the look you are going for. and most likely if you have already lost %80 of your hair it wouldn't take that long before you could have the remainder cleared. if you have any questions i'd be happy to answer them.

      Hi Kerri,
I just joined this tribe because I as having the same questions . I was telling my daughter about the pain in the ass it is to wear a bandana or hat all the time and that I am a little weirded our by going out in public with a patchy head. I seen your post and read it out to my daughter and we both just said "wow". Exact same problem. I have only had it for 3 years and thats how long it has taken to get about 80% myself. I'm tired of the bandana tan as I live in arizona and it gets a bit hot. Thanks for asking the question. I will try the ideas in the morning . Thanks Macho and Bald for your input.

I have had the same problem in the past. I don't have a good answer reallly except that I waited for more hair to fall out and made sure that I shaved every day. And I do use natural baby oil after I shave otherwise my head gets all dried out and I look like I have a bad case of dandruff. I'm partial to Burt's Bees baby oil as it smells really nice and it's all natural.

i use veg.olive oil for the simple reason i find the commercial baby oils are made from petroleum products and i dont think its a good long term idea to start rubbing that into an area where there is a danger it might leak thru to my braincell!

          also its cheaper :-)
and we are only talking a few drops not deep fry stuff!
also i rinse really well after too...so no smell,
except the aftershave my woman likes :-)
          talk later..have fun all xxxx
