Noobie here. Did anyone see Melissa on the Grammys on Sunday, 2/11? She wore her baldness, resulting from chemo, proudly, plus she looked so gorgeous! I just wanted to applaud her in a forum that would understand and appreciate what she's gone through.

Not only does being bald work for her, but she looks like she's weathered her bout with cancer quite well. Let's hope she stays cancer-free - she's one helluva singer.

I saw a picture of her in a magazine, but didn't see her live. I didn't even know that she was battling cancer. She looked good though!

It's funny because I get a lot of "Oh I'm sorry you have cancer, that's why you are bald" comments from strangers. And then I have to tell them that I'm totally healthy- no cancer. The worst is when cancer survivors come up and say it and then I have to tell them that I'm sorry they have cancer. I'm always amazed that so many people make that assumption when they see a bald woman.

I posted this in the S.H.A.G. tribe, so forgive my repetition, but there's this lovely, bald, black goddess here in Portland. I see her on the street every so often and she just takes my breath away. I want to be like her when I grow up!!

i agree. she looked amazing and i am glad that she didnt try to cover her hair loss up. she owned it and thats the way it should be.

but i am conflicted with the attention that bald women with chemo get, the compliments come at them seemingly because they are "braving being seen without hair".

i know it is futile to even argue that there should not be any risk of shame to not have hair, for what ever reason we dont have it. i like that melissa is getting positive attention. but are people kinder about her being bald because they know it wasnt a choice, and more of a result of the chemo? is her bravery that she didnt cover up something that should be shameful?

what if she was just feelin like having a shaved head? what would the reaction have been? i am just wondering what you all think the media would have said if it was a personal fashion choice and not related to a devistating illness?

i am sensitive about this because i am not bald by choice. i own it and have made it work for me. i have become it. and it is me. and thats that. but i also get a lot of "AWWW you are so brave" comments, and when peolple find out that i am actually quite happy with the way it looks, well, that confuses them.

Yeah I also get a lot of the "you're so brave" and "I could never do that" kinds of comments. It's irritating. I mean it did take a certain level of courage to decide not to wear wigs or cover up my head in some fashion. But I don't consider myself a brave person for doing it, just had to do it for my own sanity. I've been dealing with alopecia since age 10 and finally at 30 felt OK enough to be open about having it and not hiding anymore. It's so liberating now!
